The first half of two-part finale to Season IV, David Tennant as the 10th Doctor and Russell Davies as Producer. The episode begins with the resurrection of the Master (can he ever be killed?) and ends with the Master taking over humanity. But this is portrayed as only a small thing in comparison to an underlying event - the return of the Time Lords!

The Doctor arrives at the Ood Planet to confront Ood Sigma (who signalled to him at the end of the previous episode). The Doctor, fully aware of the portents of own death, has procrastinated via several detours. Sigma chastises him for his delay. The Doctor is concerned at the Ood's dramatic rate of progress since he last left. The Ood also show him their dreams of the Master. Eventually they convince the Doctor he is still alive.

The Doctor returns to Earth, but too late. The Master, via the cult of Saxon has resurrected, but not before his wife sacrifices herself to damage him. The Master has new powers, but they drain him of energy, leaving him forever hungry.

Wilfred Mott (Donna Noble's grandfather) tracks down the Doctor leaving the Doctor wondering who Wilf is. They've met up several times and just how did Wilf track him down so quickly when others cannot?

The Doctor and the Master meet and the Master telepathically forces the Doctor to listen to the sound of drumming in his head. The Doctor is shocked that the sound is real. The Master is delighted that he is not mad after all. The Master is then captured by a new player, billionaire Joshua Naismith.

Naismith has a gate, acquired from a fallen spaceship, that he believes capable of giving his daughter immortality. His team of scientists, infiltrated by two aliens from the Vinvocci that invented the gate, can't get it to work properly. He asks the Master to fix it and binds him when he has done so. But the Master escapes and uses the gate to turn every human into a copy of himself; the Master race (nice pun) is created. Only Wilf (shielded) and Donna (not completely human) are unchanged. Donna starts to remember everything. And the Time Lords make an appearance heralding their return. All is set for a climactic final part.

No doubt a few loose ends will be tied up. Who is Wilf; what key part does he play? How will the human race be saved? Where have the Time Lords been? Will they be happy about the Doctor actions to end the Time War and since? What will become of the Master? And how will the Doctor die? And re-generate?
