The Doctor, Rory and Amy burst out of the TARDIS expecting to be in Rio. Unfortunately they're in a little town in Wales in the year 2020. So begins a reasonably traditional Doctor Who story featuring an old enemy: the Silurians.
Perhaps the most intriguing part of the episode is a future Amy and Rory waving from a distance. The Doctor stops his companions from meeting their other selves. You've got to wonder what this is all about. Why did they (the future selves) do it? Is this part of the series motif?
A local drilling expedition is setting depth records (21km) and waking a slumbering enemy. The earth somehow grabs a night watchman (Mo) and later Amy and sucks them down. The Doctor surmises it's a bio-reactive defense system. But whose? Eventually they detect forces below heading for the surface. The Doctor has some clever infra-red glasses (or similar) that allow him to see in the dark. When he determines the creatures have cold blood he realises who they are.
One Silurian, a female, Alaya, is captured. She claims one of the earthlings will kill her starting a war and that she knows which one. We're lead to believe it's Tony as he's been poisoned, but I reckon it will be Ambrose. She has a hardness about her.
Amy awakes strapped to an operating table. Mo is on one too. He warns Amy they will dissect her while she's conscious. Meanwhile the Doctor and Nasreen are been sucked deep into the Earth within the TARDIS. The Doctor expects to find a small group of Silurians. Instead they find a whole city beneath the Earth.
All in all, it's pretty stock-standard stuff. It's not bad, although the pace is a little slow. I'd give it a pass mark. There's always Part II to finish it off in style.
