A fairly straight-forward episode, but with effectively two endings: one where the Doctor saves the day in the usual way and a second where the cracks re-appear with devastating effect.
The battle between the military and science wings of society is seen again, this time within the Silurians. The Doctor does his best to get the humans and Silurians to negotiate a treaty. In the end it fails after the death of Alaya at Ambrose's hand (as predicted) comes to light. The leader of the Silurians put his people back to sleep for 1,000 years in the hope that humans will be ready for peace then. The Doctor challenges the humans to be the best of humanity and prepare the way.
Then just as they are all about to escape, the Doctor, Amy and Rory see a crack in the wall. The Doctor is concerned he doesn't understand what they are despite Prisoner Zero and the Weeping Angels seeming to know. He approaches the crack hoping to get some shrapnel from the explosion to explain the cracks. A dying Restac appears and tries to shoot the Doctor. Rory intervenes to save the Doctor at the cost of his own life! There are distressing scenes as Amy wants to stay with him, but the Doctor drags her away. The crack absorbs Rory and the Doctor is unable to help Amy remember him as he is erased from time. With Rory forgotten she is her normal happy self. Only when she sees a future self waving, does she think for a second she saw someone else (both future Rory and Amy waved in the previous episode).
It's very rare for a companion to die (Adric is the only one that springs to mind) and Rory has managed it twice, coming back to life in Amy's Choice. It seems unlikely he will do so this time. But who knows with the cracks. You have to wonder what the producers are up to. Rory's death was so unexpected and so final.
We've seen possibly two future selves so far: the Doctor in Flesh and Stone coming back to encourage Amy, and Rory and Amy in this episode. What is this about?
The episode ends with the Doctor finally taking a look at the piece of shrapnel. It is a piece of the TARDIS' door. As I speculated in The Eleventh Hour could the Doctor have caused the explosion? And is it the TARDIS that explodes?
