A gutsy 2-1 win away after going down to 10 men after about 15 minutes. Rhys Williams made a clumsy challenge, gave away a penalty and received a red card for his trouble. Oman then converted the penalty (but only after Schwarzer blocked the shot and they put away the rebound). A poor start in a crucial match. But Australia rallied and equalised before half-time. They then survived a sustained attack to snatch a win with a few minutes to go.

This is an incredibly important win in terms of qualification for the Asian Cup. We're now top of our group with a relatively easier path in our last couple of games.

In context of the World Cup it's hard to say what it means. Once again we've been outplayed, reasonably comprehensively in the opinion of many. That's a big concern. The experience of our players meant we were able to knuckle down and make the most of the few chances that came our way. But our opponents at the finals are unlikely to be so generous. Clearly we need to improve. But we keep winning. At the very least, the results should bind our team together.
