Australia's first half was very poor and Germany's was very good. Despite all that we nearly went into the break at 1-1.

Our defensive issues were once again on show and we were lucky that Germany failed to take their chances. We got off to a disastrous start conceding in just the fifth minute. It's difficult to imagine that addressing these issues and keeping a clean sheet were not the focus of our preparation, so it seems the players are at fault here. For the rest of the half things did not improve. We gave away possession cheaply and consequently were constantly under pressure. Germany created many excellent chances but failed to take them. Towards the end of the half we got an undeserved equaliser - Rogic continuing his good form and finding a way under the goalkeeper. At this point we looked to have rescued a poor half, only to suffer another lapse and give away a penalty with a couple of minutes to go. 1-2 at the break.

In the second half, it looked like it was going to be more of the same as we inconceivably conceded another early goal. Postecoglou must be tearing his hair out. At 1-3 I think it's fair to say the Germans probably eased up a little. However, our general play did improve. Our passes started to stick, we kept possession for useful periods and we able to build some pressure in attack and defence. A goalkeeping fumble lead to our second goal - Juric on the spot - but I feel we deserved it. With half an hour to go, there was hope. We then did our best to ramp up the pressure as we searched for an equaliser. Only some quality defence kept us out. 2-3 it finished.

It's possible that we had the better to the second half. Certainly we looked good for the last 40 minutes. However, football is a 90-minute game and we were very ordinary for the first 50 minutes. Our defence still has issues and our concentration early in the half must be addressed. All that said, there is some hope. If we can play like we did at the end of this game, consistently for the full 90 minutes of our next two games, there's a good chance we can get something out of this tournament.
