The first ever meeting between the Socceroos and Cameroon ended in a 1-1 draw, a result that suits neither side. Germany and Chile also drew, meaning Australia now needs to defeat Chile (by 2+ goals) to have any chance of progressing.

Australia began the first half in a positive fashion and looked the better side early on. We were able to hold possession and generate some chances. Cameroon were a little slower to start but soon found their stride with their pace and physicality troubling the Aussies. They created more chances but it was pretty even. Unfortunately, just as it looked we would head into the break at 0-0 we conceded a soft goal in injury time. A long through ball and a well-taken shot and we were completely undone. The press has been pretty critical of this, but in the end I thought it was a pretty good goal. It was incredibly frustrating to concede at that time to what was a simple move, but it did not seem to me to be the same of issue that we've seen recently.

In the second half we threw ourselves into the match. We earned a penalty, duly converted by Mark Milligan, and were left with half an hour to pull off a win. Postecoglou rang the changes but it was to no avail. On the day, we were out-pointed and if you go by the statistics were fortunate to get a draw. Statistics aren't everything, but with so much at stake, we needed a better performance.
