In the end Australia were comfortable winners. It wasn't a great performance, but it was another win and another clean sheet and there's a lot to be said for that.

Naturally I went to the game as it was in Sydney. For the first time ever though, there were issues with the special event buses out to the stadium. I've always found them to be quick, punctual and a very convenient way to get to the game. But for this game the bus was very late and I only just made it in time for kick-off. Talking to someone else on the bus it seems four buses didn't turn up.

Australia's start was equally scratchy. A few big names were out and those on the pitch struggled a bit - a few communication errors were evident. Nonetheless we were much more adventurous than our last game here. We created several chances but wasted them, Scott McDonald in particular. Nonetheless there wasn't much to be concered about at half-time.

In the second half we were probably a bit better. We created many more chances, the best of which we wasted - will Scott McDonald ever score for Australia? - and put away a couple of the poorer ones. A good result and we're top of our group after Japan drew.

There's been a lot of talk about Pim Verbeek and whether he's the man to take us to the World Cup Finals. Sure we've been uninspiring at times. But it's hard to question the results. Five wins and two draws with no goals conceded under some very difficult conditions. We would have given anything for this sort of consistency and outcomes not so long ago.

That said, we need to play better and different football at the finals. This match suggested Verbeek can be a bit more expansive so you never know, maybe he's the guy.
