Australia has progressed to the next stage of World Cup qualification with an emphatic 3-1 away win over Qatar! A Brett Emerton double did the damage. Kewell wrapped it up with a third before a late consolation to Qatar.

Yet another match I didn't get to see, but there were extensive highlights on SBS today. Australia had one of its better games of this qualifying series. Qatar made some chances, but by the sounds of it, we were the better side and deserved the win. We've qualified for the next stage which is excellent, although it reduces the attraction of the game next week a little.

With only a dead rubber to come, a review of the five qualifiers seems worthwhile. Overall, we've had an average tournament. We've played well at times, okay at times and quite poor at times. Verbeek can be reasonably happy. He's got the first part of his job done and has the luxury of a dead rubber to experiment a little. There's definitely room for improvement though. The next stage of qualification will be tougher and we'll need to produce a higher standard of play more consistently if we're to make it to South Africa in 2010.
