I couldn't bear to watch this game. There seemed little point in getting up at midnight to torture myself as we failed to progress to the round of 16 for the third consecutive time. So I awoke to the news that we'd missed out. France and Denmark drew as expected (given this was a result that suited them both). Peru restored some pride to their disappointing campaign by beating us 2-0 and consigning us to last spot in our group.

Overall it was a disappointing campaign. While our difficulties in front of goal were known going into the tournament, we didn't make enough of our assets. When we played the Australian way of positive, aggressive football we looked great and created chances. When we didn't, we struggled. I thought van Marwijk did a good job in the short timeframe he had with an unfamiliar setup, but foreign coaches do not seem to get our style.

Let's hope we can do better next time. We have a good coach in Graham Arnold who will almost certainly have our team playing the Australia way. We have some good juniors coming through. And we have four years to prepare.
