A see-sawing match that began well for Australia with an early goal. The Thais equalised with a well-taken effort before threatening a boilover by taking the lead in the second half. Postecoglou wielded the changes and we earnt our second penalty of the evening to draw level. Both pushed for the winner and a case could be made that the Thais looked more likely. A fine save from Ryan at the death ensured we took away a point.

The result leaves us in third spot at the half-way mark in a very tight group. Japan and Saudi Arabia are on 10 points. We are on 9 points along with the UAE. Only the top two teams are guaranteed a spot at the World Cup finals. Finish third and you still have a chance via messy qualification path. Fourth and you miss out. So the second half will be crucial. We have three home games (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Thailand) and two away games (Iraq, Japan). It's doable and within our own control at the moment, but we can't afford another slip-up like this result.
