In the quadrennial lottery that is known as Australia's World Cup qualification, Uruguay defeated Australia 0-1 in Monte Video. Australia, under Guus Huddink, looked a lot better than they have in the past. That said, Uruguay could easily have had one or two more if not for some good work by goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

It's difficult to follow the Socceroos at this time. They're looking a much better side. The FFA under Lowy and O'Neill is much better organised - nothing has been left to chance in the preparation for these matches against the fifth-best South American team. But we've never managed to clear this hurdle in all the years I've been following the Socceroos, so it's tempting not to back them to avoid the disappointment of missing out on the finals again. Heresy, I know.

All the gamesmanship over kick-off times and flights is done with. The teams are on their way here. Now we wait for the big match on Wednesday night. I've got my tickets.
