Don't Be Different

Bruce Schneier has an excellent article about the practical implications of the war on terror. In short, if you encourage ordinary citizens to report anything "suspicious" and security staff automatically escalate the report (to cover their ass), then madness ensues.

We see this sort of thing in Australia with the terrorism hotline ads. The voice overs suggest all manner of things should be reported, many of which could be entirely innocent. The moral of the story seems to be don't act differently if you want be safe from being reported and the hell that follows. A pretty poor society to live in if you ask me. So don't automatically report your fears. Step back and assess whether something really is suspicious.
