World Cup Finals 2006 - Almost

I gave a presentation on the World Cup today. It was very well attended and I received lots of good feedback. I spoke for about 90 minutes and included slides and video. Great fun.

With the World Cup due to kick-off tomorrow, I thought I should make a few predictions:

  • Germany will do very well. They've got a strong team and the home ground advantage should be a big help. I don't think they'll win, but you never know.
  • I am uninspired by Brazil's build-up. Playing easy beats is not enough. They'll win our group I suppose, but definitely won't win the whole thing.
  • Italy could be a bit of a dark horse. Always a strong team, the off-field dramas could unite them a-la 1982.
  • France - difficult to see them doing really well. Is Zidane going to be fit enough?
  • Argentina could do well. Again, always a strong team and could fly under the radar.
  • England will go out in the quarter-finals again :)
  • Australia - the big question is can we finish second in our group. It all hangs on our first game against Japan. We must win or we can pack our bags and go home. If we can snare a draw against Brazil (or even if we don't), we'll know what we'll need from our last game against Croatia. I'm biased of course, but I think we can do it. I think Tim Cahill will be our MVP. Kewell is not fit enough and Cahill has the uncanny ability to be in the right spot at the right time.
  • Spain - can they finally deliver and win a big tournament? Not this time.
