Two Weeks To Go

This time next week the first game (South Africa vs Mexico) will have been played. Australia was the first team to arrive in South Africa and are training at altitude. The aim is to be the fittest team (again?) at the finals, but will we be?

Certain teams have injury problems, somewhat fortunately for Australia, this includes Germany and Ghana. But these countries have ruled out their players and brought in (presumably fit) replacements. We have a few players who aren't training in full. And they're key players as well. In addition, many of our key players are short on match practice. Our opponents' players will have just completed full seasons in tough leagues. I think we'll struggle to be the fittest team. Our regular starting eleven has a lot of work to do just to be fit enough to play, let alone be super-fit. Let's hope the 14 days and two friendlies are enough. I remain unconvinced.

Meanwhile, the media has jumped on the band-wagon. There are now daily stories on the Socceroos in most media. The Matildas have also scored a fair bit of coverage at the Asian Cup, where they're into the Final and have qualified for their World Cup finals.

NZ 1 Serbia 0 is the overnight result. This is good news for Australia. While the Serbian team has been described as "experimental", their performance was poor and the Kiwis were deserved winners. The Serbians have over three weeks to sort things out before they play us, but still.
