Germany defeated Brazil 2-0 in an entertaining final to retain their title as world champions. They also set an incredible record of going through the entire tournament without conceding a goal.
I stayed up to watch and it was well worth it. The early exchanges saw a lot of end to end stuff as both teams attacked. Brazil eventually got on top and dominated the first half but couldn't find the net. Germany were impressive in defense. 0-0 at half-time.
Germany lifted early in the second half and were rewarded will a pretty good goal. And Brazil struggled to find the answer. They earnt a penalty though and Marta stepped up. A poor kick was well saved. Brazil pressed on but struggled to break down the German's defense. Germany got a second with a few minutes to go - a great header from a corner.
All in all, a quite enjoyable game. The referee was an Australian and she did pretty well. I thought Germany's tactics were very good - they managed to nullify the strengths of Brazil. The quality of the game was pretty high - although I think the women's game is not quite as strong in defense (yet) and the goalkeeping probably has a way to go to. But I'll keep watching.
[Update] Alex @ work has just returned from the USA. He notes that the progress of the USA team at the World Cup was very closely followed on the major TV stations. Further, even the national league results (now with Beckham) are getting coverage.
